21st Century: Query 182 (Donald Trump)

“I don’t like to analyze myself because I might not like what I see.” ~ Donald Trump , also known as “45,”  from Trump’s biography Never Enough , by Michael D’Antonio .  D’Antonio is an American author, journalist, and commentator on CNN . He shared the 1984 Pulitzer Prize for Local Reporting with a team of Newsday reporters for their coverage of the Baby Jane Doe Case . He has written over a dozen books, including Never Enough , a 2015 biography of Donald Trump , and A Consequential President , a 2017 book on the Presidency of Barack Obama . His book Mortal Sins was a 2014 Edgar Award nominee. How has Trump nailed what we already suspect about the public man? Does this comment show a glimmer of conscience? Why or why not? Is Trump’s comment an indication that he might be more self-aware than he reveals as a public figure? Why or why not? How is his comment ironic?

In this iconic 1962 Diane Arbus  Central Park photograph,  Colin Wood, a seven-year old boy, mugs for the camera. He clutches a hand grenade in his right hand and stiffens his left hand into a claw. ______________________ “A photograph is a secret about a secret. The more it tells you the less you know.” ~ Diane Arbus was an American photographer. Arbus famously worked to normalize marginalized groups and highlight the importance of proper representation of all people. She worked with a wide range of subjects including members of the LGBTQ+ community, strippers, carnival performers, nudists, dwarves, children, mothers, couples, elderly people, and middle-class families. How might Arbus’ assertion seem ironic and incongruent to what we generally assume about the power of the visual medium, for example, “A picture is worth a thousand words”? “I have too great a soul to die like a criminal.” ~ John Wilkes Booth was an American actor who assassinated President Abraham Lincoln at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C., on April 14, 1865. A member of the prominent, 19th-century Booth theatrical family from Maryland, and a famous actor in his own right, Booth was also a Confederate sympathizer who, denouncing President Lincoln, lamented the recent abolition of slavery in the United States . How might Booth’s assertion be ironic, given the manner of his own death? How might Booth himself view the historical record of his life, actions, and “great soul”? What current person of note expresses a similar high opinion of him or herself? How does this person act out in the public area? How might this ignoble figure end up dying “like a criminal” despite his or her assertion of greatness?
