21st Century: Query 136 (Nikki Haley)
Two very
different quotes from Nikki Haley, an American diplomat and politician who served as United States Ambassador to
the United Nations from January 2017 to December 2018. As a Republican, she served
as Governor of South Carolina from 2011 to 2017 and three terms as a
representative in the legislature:
1. “I want someone who is going to hold Republicans accountable, and I want someone who is going to make a difference, not just for our party but for every person they represent in the country.”
~ Nikki Haley, explaining why she
would not be supporting Donald Trump in 2016 (CNN, February 17, 2016)
2. “In every
instance I dealt with him, he was truthful.”
~ Nikki Haley, explaining why she
now supports Donald Trump (Today Show Interview with Savannah Guthrie, November 12, 2019)
In your
opinion, why would Haley change her mind so drastically about Trump?
How does Haley’s
claim of Trump’s truthfulness match up with his 13,000 + lies tracked by Politifact
since January 20, 2016?
Also, according
to the November 12, 2019, Washington Examiner, Haley is “clearly angling” for Trump to “dump” Vice-President Mike Pence. How
plausible is this possibility, keeping in mind that, in 2016, Haley was a Trump
detractor?
